What is Aluminum Die Casting?

 

While it is not very common, some people often think that aluminum die casting is different fromdie casting. The truth is there is no difference between aluminum die casting and die casting; the only difference is the type of alloy that is being used. Therefore, to understand what aluminum die casting is you have to become familiar with die casting.

Die casting is a process used by a few companies to engineer metal parts, such as bathroom faucets or even shower heads. How die casting works is the metal being used is first turned into molten metal. Once the metal is hot enough it is put into steel molds, which are called dies. The dies are made from steel because that is the only metal strong enough. Unlike other types of molds, such as plastic, the steel won’t become compromised no matter how hot the molten metal is or how long the metal sits inside the molds. As an added bonus, the steel molds are reusable, which is how some companies are able to mass-produce their products.
Not only are the dies reusable, but also they can also be made into any shape desired, even the most complex shapes can be made with steel molds. These steel molds can also allow the parts being made to be perfectly defined, but they can also be used to create smooth or textured surfaces. Most importantly though is that the dies are used to give the products the finishes you see inside the stores. For example, a die that produces satin nickel finishes is not going to be used to create a nickel finish.

 

While the biggest difference between die casting and aluminum die casting is the type of metal being used there, is another small difference. Die casting is used in a variety of industries, but not all industries can use aluminum die casting. While aluminum die casting isn’t used in every industry out there because it isn’t the strongest metal around, but it is one of the lightest metals used in die casting so it is becoming more popular. In fact, more and more companies are beginning to use aluminum in car engines, including engine blocks. However, aluminum is more commonly used in other industries, such as the toy industry.

 

Die casting through pressure injection has been around since the mid-1800’s, but aluminum die casting wasn’t introduced until 1914. When pressure injection was first being used, the main alloys used were different combinations of tin and lead, how they were mixed together depended on what was being made. In 1914, zinc and aluminum became the alloys of choice because they were a lot stronger than any combination of tin and lead, but all of the old alloys are still being used today. Something else that makes a difference in the world of die casting is the method being used, while we still use a pressure injection type of die casting it is no longer a low-pressure method. Today the force used to make the products often exceeds 4500 pounds per square inch.
